Sage (Salvia officinalis) is used in folk medicine as a remedy for inflammatory processes of bowels, stomach, liver, kidneys, bile and urinary tracts. The name in Latin means that this plant is sanative and healing and it is considered one of the best natural antibiotics and antiseptics.

Throughout history the effectiveness of sage has even been confirmed by law! Namely, Charles the Great knew of it’s salubrity, so he ordered by law that every monastery must grow about one hundered different species of medicinal plants, of which the most important one was sage.

The healing parts of sage are it’s leaves and young twigs, and to preserve all the useful ingredients, they should be picked before blooming. Drying should take place in a shade, in a well-ventilated room with no more than 40 ° C. It is very important to do this properly, because it’s leaves are rich with carbohydrates, cellulose, tannins and proteins. Apart from this organic substances, they also contain a lot of iron and calcium, and they are especially rich with vitamin A. However, the most important of all ingredients is essential oil.

Sage has a characteristic to constrict, and that is why it is so efficient with diarrhea and stomach aches and cramps. To prepare the tea it is enough to put half a teaspoon of leaves in one cup of water, and for the therapy to provide the best results, it is recommended to drink two cups a day, with small sips.

Sage is also effective in treating diseases of respiratory organs because it improves the ejection of mucus. To prepare this tea, a whole teaspoon of leaves is mixed in a cup with hot water, it should be cooked for five minutes and left to stand with a lid for ten more minutes. The effectiveness of sage which has been recommended by herbalists many centuries ago, has gotten it’s official scientific confirmation that it improves memory. In fact, scientists from Newcastle did a research with healthy individuals from 18 to 37 years old, they gave capsules with sage oil to one group of examinees and placebos (sunflower oil) to the other. It turned out that the group that took sage oil showed better results on memory tests.

After these results, scientists got more interested in doing researches on sage as a potential cure for Alzheimer’s disease. It is already discovered that this plant inhibits acetylcholinesterase, which has a negative effect on memory. Alzheimer’s desease is the most common form of dementia throughout the world, so finding the cure would be a revolutionary breakthrough. Scientists believe that sage has anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and hormone-like characteristics, which can help treating this disease.

Sage is an unavoidable ingredient of many medication that are used for mouth rinsing and for throat inflammation. Tannin that comes from sage strengthens the mucous membranes, while essential oil has antiseptic effect. It is interesting that before discovering antibiotics, sage was used for centuries for throat and pharynx inflammations, hoarseness, and for preparing the tea for TB patients. Today, sage extract is often added to toothpastes.

In folk medicine it is used for strengthening of nerves, and it helps against any kind of cold or flu. It is also used for blood cleansing, and against all kinds of inflammations, starting with pharynx and internal organs up to bladder and vaginal inflammations. Also, it eases the pains for the ones suffering from rheumatism.

As a cooking spice it affects the digestion processes and bile secretion. Sage also has a spasmolytic effect, and it loosens the muscles, while it decreases sweat secretion. For it’s antimicrobial effect it is used in antiviral ointments against herpes. Sage is a universal medicinal plant, but it should not be used by pregnant women, women that are breastfeeding and epileptics. Also, it is not recommended to consumate the tea for a long time in continuity, because it can lead to convulsions in the form of a breakdown.

Folk medicine recommends sage as a cure for impotence. The drug is made by putting 30 grams of sage and 70 grams of rosemary in two liters of quality domestic wine, and then boiled with vapor for a few minutes. The wine is then left to cool down and to get lukewarm and then 30 grams of haney is added. Everything is mixed, poured into glass bottles and one brandy glass should be drank before every meal. Wine made like this is not only good for potency, but it also helps with recovering the organism with convalescence.
